Getting and staying organized isn’t easy—especially when you have ADHD.
A scattered brain, constant overwhelm, and the daily struggle just to get basic tasks done can make organizing feel impossible. And if you lose things all the time, having clutter makes it even harder to find what you need.
You're not lazy, and you're not alone. With a few simple, ADHD-friendly steps, getting rid of clutter can feel easier—and very empowering. Take it slow, just do a step at a time, and see what you can get done.
Evaluate the Space & Remove Anything Not Needed
Create more space by decluttering or relocating
Move any Items that work better in another location
Remove anything you easily determine can be thrown away
Label containers even if just with a sticker or Sharpie
Keep near you until done so you don't get distracted leaving the room
Move to another room (closet, drawer, cupboard, etc).
Donate (to a person, thrift store, or shelter)
Throw Away (take a photo if it’s difficult to throw out)
Sell (only if it will make enough $ to be worth your time)
Visualize How your System will Work
Picture what will go where
Determine if you need Containers, Hangers, Shelves, etc.
Organize in a Way that Works for You
Slow & methodical or working fast
Cleaning as you organize or simply moving things around
All at once or in small chunks
Taking everything out first, then putting just what you need back in
Reorganizing what’s there (getting rid of a few things as you go)
Brutally decluttering
Having help or alone with fewer distractions
Let others in your home know your vision of keeping it organized & what they can do to support you.
Don’t fret if it gets messy at times, just do a bit here and there to keep it up
Clean up with small efforts that become habits so you can keep it orderly
You may need to change the way you organized it at times or just tweak it a bit
Don't give up - you're capable of more than you realize!
